Drug usage

Effexor is an antidepressant that belongs to a group of medicines called as Selective Serotonin and Norepinephrine Reuptake Inhibitors (SSNRIs). The medicine works on the substances in the brain associated with mood problems.

How taken

Always follow the doctor's direction while taking Effexor. Do not ever deviate from the prescriptions. Do not take larger doses or use the medicine for longer periods as it can only bring in many complications. Moreover, do not stop the drug in the middle of a course without consulting the physician or it may lead to unpleasant side effects.

The drug has to be taken with food. Effexor should not be crushed, chewed or broken as it is a control-released capsule. If there is any difficulty in swallowing the drug, mix the granules in some applause and have it. The mixture should be swallowed whole and do not chew the drug.

Missed dose/overdose

Never miss any dosage. If you want good results, take the right dosage at the right time. But if you have forgotten to have a dose, take it as soon as you remember it. Never take a missed dose if the time for your scheduled dosage is very near. Moreover, never compensate for the missed doses as it can only add to the complications.

In case you suspect an overdose, contact the doctor immediately. Dizziness, sleepiness and nausea are some of the overdose symptoms of Effexor.

Discuss with your doctor if you have liver diseases, kidney problems, bipolar disorder, glaucoma, high blood pressure, seizures, bleeding disorders and high cholesterol levels. If you have any of these conditions, the doctor may not prescribe Effexor or he may alter eh dosages.

Effexor is FDA pregnancy category C. Pregnant women and those women who breast-feed their babes should have to avoid the drug, as it is known to cause harm to the foetus and the new born.

Effexor should have to be avoided if you have allergies to venlafaxine. Do not take the drug if you are using monoamine oxidase inhibitors like selegiline, phenelzine, rasagiline and isocarboxazid.

Avoid alcohol when you are on Effexor medication as mixing the two only increases the risk of side effects.

Effexor comes with many allergic reactions like rash, difficulty breathing and swelling.

Contact the doctor mmediately I you come across any serious side effects like increased blood pressure, easy bruising, severe blistering, red skin, high fever, fast heartbeats, sweating, tremors, vomiting, over active reflexes, mood changes and appetite loss.
